Informations from the FIDS system is displayed on electronic information boards or on television screens. Information about all arrivals and departures appears in real time. Boards can be mounted inside or near the airport terminal in places clearly visible to passengers. The FIDS system is used to help passengers during air travel and people who want to pick up passengers after the flight.

In addition to the standard display (on screens), it is possible to install a virtual version of FIDS on the airport’s website. It is also possible to limit the information displayed on a single screen to information about one passenger terminal, or even only about one large airline.

Each line on the FIDS screen indicates a different flight number, which is accompanied by:

  • Airline name / logo and / or airline designation in the IATA or ICAO system,
  • City of origin or destination and any waypoints,
  • Expected arrival or departure time and current time (reflecting any delays),
  • Gate number,
  • Check-in numbers or the name of the check-in line,
  • Flight status, e.g. “Landed”, “Delayed”, “Boarding” etc.

By displaying ICAO codes for a single flight, it is possible to display information on the operation of several different flight numbers (airlines), although only one aircraft serves this route at the same time. It is possible to sort by time, airline name or city.

To function properly FIDS cooperates with systems such as:

  • FIMS (Flight Information Management System) also called FIS (Flight Information System),
  • SAC (Sort Allocation Computer).
